FAQ's about the FSC program
What is an FSC?
The Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) is a card required to purchase a handgun or long gun (rifle/shotgun) in California. To obtain an FSC, you must take and pass a written test on firearms laws and safety requirements. The test is administered by DOJ Certified Instructors, who are generally located at firearms dealerships. The exam is 30 questions and a score of 70% must be obtained. An FSC is valid for five years.
Who needs one?
Anyone who is looking to buy, transfer, or otherwise take legal posesion of a handgun, shotgun, or rifle in california musrt have a valid FSC card prior to taking posession of the firearm unless they have an exemption.
How do I get one?
You must take and pass a 30 question written exam with a score of 75% or higher (23 out of 30 correct) to obtain your FSC. True or false and multiple choise questions will be present on the test.
What if I fail the exam?
If you fail the test the first time, you may retake another version of the test from the same FSC Program DOJ Certified Instructor without any additional fee after 24 hours have elapsed. The FSC Program DOJ Certified Instructor is required to offer or make available to you the FSC Study Guide or refer you to view the webinar.
What If I lose my FSC?
A replacement FSC is available only through the FSC Program DOJ Certified Instructor who issued your FSC. The FSC replacement cost is $5. The replacement FSC will reflect the same expiration date as your original FSC.
How should I prepare?
The best way to prepare for the FSC Test is to read the FSC Study Guide. The study guide contains all the information necessary to pass the test. The FSC webinar is also a useful study tool.
